Condition & Technical Specifications
In this section you can read more about the technical condition, specifications and certifications of our shipping containers.
We explain the differences between new and used containers, what you can expect in terms of quality, and which standards (such as ISO and CSC) apply. This gives you a clear overview of your container's features and usability.
What condition is a used shipping container in?
Used shipping containers have served an average of 13–15 years in international transport.
Upon arrival at our depot, these containers are:
- Tested for wind and water tightness
- Inspected for hinges and locks
- Tested for suitability for CSC certification (if applicable)
Optically, used containers may show the following:
- Dents and scratches
- Local rust formation
- Multiple layers of paint or painted-over logos
- Traces of previous recovery
This is normal after intensive use in global shipping.
Delivery condition used containers:
- For storage: wind and waterproof
- For transport: wind and watertight, load-worthy and provided with a CSC valid for at least 12 months
What condition is a new shipping container in?
New containers (so-called “one-way” containers) are produced in the factory and used once to transport cargo from Asia to Europe.
During this first transport journey, minor signs of use may occur, such as:
- Minor dents and scratches
- Light rust formation
- Forklift tracks on the floor
Containers with structural damage or deep dents (>50 mm) will not be delivered.
New containers are standard:
- ISO certified
- CSC certified
- Equipped with ventilation grilles
- Equipped with a burglar-resistant lockbox
Is a new container really new?
Yes. The container is newly manufactured, but is used once for transport to Europe. After unloading, the container is inspected and, if necessary, cosmetically repaired before being available for sale.
Empty shipping from the factory could cause the same minor transport damage and is therefore not economically and logistically efficient.
What does CSC mean?
CSC stands for Convention for Safe Containers (1972), drawn up under the supervision of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The CSC Convention has two objectives:
- Ensuring safety when stacking, lifting and transporting containers
- Standardizing international safety requirements to prevent national differences
A CSC certificate is mandatory for containers used for international transport.
Do I need CSC?
- For international transport: Yes
- For storage within the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany: No
Validity:
- Used containers: usually 12 months
- New containers: 5 years from date of production
A copy of the certificate can be requested when ordering.
What is the difference in quality between new and used?
New sea containers
- Straight from the factory in China
- Shipped once to the Netherlands or Belgium
- Equipped with lockbox, ventilation grilles and mid-height door handles
- Choice of various RAL colours
Suitable for storage and transport - ISO and CSC certified
Used shipping containers
- Used in international shipping for approximately 13 years on average
- Checked on:
Wind and water tightness
Hinges and locks - ISO and CSC certified again after approval
- Fully functional for storage and transport
- Optical signs of use possible (such as rust, scratches and dents)
Does the container come with a lock as standard?
New containers:
- Equipped with a lockbox as standard
- Lock can be ordered optionally
Used containers:
- No lockbox unless stated
- Lockbox can be optionally mounted (delivery time will be extended by a few days)
Please note: A padlock or disc lock fitted via the seal lip offers limited security.
Can I choose the color of my container?
- New containers: available in selected RAL colours (if in stock)
- Used containers: color depends on current stock
Spraying in a specific RAL colour is possible at an additional cost.
In that case, the delivery time will be extended by a few weeks.
Order, Inspection & Other Conditions
In this section you will find additional information about the ordering process, inspection options, price agreements and legal rights.
If you have any questions after reading this, please feel free to contact us.
Can I receive photos before delivery?
Yes, this is available as an option during the ordering process.
If you reject the container based on the photos:
- Do you receive photos of an alternative?
- We will cancel the purchase if you also reject this alternative.
- You only pay the costs for the photo option
- The purchase amount will be refunded
Can I inspect the container beforehand?
Due to safety regulations, free access to the depot is not permitted.
You can choose an inspection appointment when ordering (at additional cost).
The container will then be released and delivery will only take place after your visit.
Is price negotiation possible?
For individual purchases, the fixed website prices apply. These are market-based and based on prepayment.
For the purchase of multiple containers, you can request a quote via:
info@zeecontainer-discounter.nl

If you are acting as a consumer, you have the right to withdraw from the agreement within 14 days of delivery without stating reasons.

Use for storage, rental, placement on location, modification, processing, or any other form of commissioning is considered more extensive use than permitted.
Liability for depreciation
If the container has been used more than necessary for inspection, you are liable for the resulting depreciation.

- User damage

- Structural or cosmetic modifications
- Contamination or loading

What does the Sea Container Discounter Buyback Guarantee entail?
When in doubt between renting or buying, purchasing can be financially more attractive in the long term.
When renting, the lessor remains the owner of the container. If you decide to purchase after several years, you typically pay the then-current market price, even though you have already paid rent. Furthermore, terminating a rental agreement is often less practical when the container is filled and located on your premises.
Upon purchase, you immediately become the legal owner. This offers, among other things:
- Option for accounting depreciation
- No ongoing rental obligations
- Full control over use and destination
How does the buy-back guarantee work?
We offer you the possibility to submit a buy-back request from 5 years after purchase, at your request.
Important to know:
- Buy-back is not automatic
- Buy-back only takes place after a written request
- We will assess the container at that time for condition and market value
- The buy-back offer is non-binding and not guaranteed in advance
The buy-back price is determined based on:
- The technical and optical condition of the container
- Normal wear and tear from regular use
- Any damage, modifications, or corrosion
- The market value applicable at that time
Containers that have been structurally modified, permanently anchored, or are in poor condition may be excluded from buy-back.
With this arrangement:
- You own instead of rent
- You have the option to sell after a longer period of use
- Your investment remains flexible
